A Full Expression of the Land

Since 1908, we have grown fresh fruits and vegetables at the corner of 4th avenue and 7th street in St. Catharines, Ontario. Last year we celebrate our 100th year in agriculture.

We are pleased to offer you quality produce from our fields with a focus on taste, nutrition and friendly service. We offer a unique variety of fresh, sweet and healthy fruits and vegetables, as well as a colourful selection of flowers. Located in rural west end of St. Catharines, the Garden City, we are nestled at the base of the Niagara escarpment in the heart of Canada's picturesque Niagara Region. We are a one hour drive from Toronto along the shore of Lake Ontario and we are open to the public Monday to Saturday from May to October. Current production includes strawberries, sweet cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, grapes, pears, plums, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, melons and vegetables as well as specialty products including jam, maple syrup and honey.

Farm Bakery

Our on farm bakery is becoming a very special component of our operation and it allows us to connect with the community in a new way. Whitty Farms also offers its customers the pleasure of enjoying ripe strawberries, plump juicy raspberries or tree ripened peaches piled atop vanilla soft serve ice cream. Customers may relax on the deck looking over the raspberry fields or wander the market while they take pleasure in their ice cream treats. We are also proud to be part of the Niagara culinary trail.

13th Street Winery

Whitty Farms is excited to partner with Thirteenth Street Winery, one of the best wineries in Ontario. This summer we invite you to celebrate with us as we welcome you to the new retail site for the Thirteenth Street Winery. www.13thstreetwinery.com

At Whitty Farms we strive to offer our customers a FULL EXPRESSION OF THE LAND.

Environmental Farm Plan

On our farm, the Environmental Farm Plan has helped us to utilize better irrigation technology to reduce our water and fertilizer usage. We have also modified our pest management so that we have improved our application efficiency while reducing spray drift, fuel consumption and soil compaction. A third initiative which we have taken under this program is to utilize netting instead of acoustic scaring devices to protect our grape crop from the devastation of bird predation! Our neighbours really like this last one.

The Future

We appreciate when the community supports farmers by making the choice to buy local whenever possible.

Our goals for the future include:

  • • Maintaining an atmosphere of authenticity, hospitality and product integrity. One way to attract people to our market is to offer products that are unique to our farming operation. Among the many farm fresh products we offer are carefully selected varieties of strawberries that are picked and offered for sale immediately from the field. Many of our berries are consumed within hours of harvest. This phenomenon is also demonstrated during harvest of other crops such as our sugar enhanced varieties of sweet corn. People actually watch and wait in anticipation of the morning harvest. Both scenarios are difficult to recreate off farm.
  • • Striving to provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service and convenience.
  • • Cultivating a spirit of optimism and interest through innovative production practices and unique products (i.e. Ginseng shade structure over day neutral strawberries, Northern Kiwi, new cherry varieties on dwarfing rootstocks)
  • • Creating a temporal, festive and enjoyable sensory experience for our customers and staff. (i.e. attractive displays, daily produce sampling and the addition of a flower market)
  • • Fostering a sense of ownership, participation, mutual trust and respect among all of our customers and employees
  • • Demonstrating commitment to the local community
  • • Supporting agricultural education, research, extension and organizations
  • • Remaining open to change

It will be another year of new beginnings, tradition & celebration. We look forward sharing our 101th year in agriculture with you.

We are optimistic about the future. Eat well. Live Well.
